March through August is tornado season. When a tornado alarm sounds, you have only a short amount of time to make important decisions. Advance planning and a quick response are the keys to surviving a tornado. Here are some tips to help you plan.
When a tornado is sighted within a five mile radius of Clarendon Hills, the tornado warning siren will sound a continuous signal for two minutes. The warning is effective for one hour. There is no "all clear" signal. If another tornado is sighted, the siren will again sound for two minutes, extending the warning period one hour.
When the siren activates, please do not call the Fire or Police emergency or non-emergency numbers to inquire about the warning. The telephone lines must be kept open during emergencies.
Keep a flashlight and battery-operated radio handy and locate shelter.
Inside of the home: Go to the basement. If you do not have a basement, go to an interior room or hallway on the lowest level. Get under a sturdy table, if possible.
Outside of the home: Be aware of the designated shelter area in school or public buildings you frequent.
Stay tuned to your radio or TV during threatening conditions and be prepared to take shelter.
Fire Chief Brian Leahy is the Village's Emergency Preparedness Coordinator. He can be contacted on the Fire Department non-emergency number (630-286-5430) during working hours to answer preparedness questions.
