Downtown Train Station
The Village of Clarendon Hills completed a Downtown Master Plan in March of 2006. At the time that the plan was adopted both the economy and real estate market were much different than today. Speculative development was occurring throughout the region for all types of projects including retail, office, residential and mixed use. The train station site was called out in the Downtown Plan as a key redevelopment site. While the economy and market began to switch directions in late 2007, the train station site remained a focal point of potential Downtown revitalization. This was due to the fact that it occupies a large site in the heart of Downtown that attracts commuters from within and outside the Village on a daily basis. In addition, the Village was interested in exploring ways to improve the site and maximize ridership and parking opportunities. To pursue this interest, in 2009, the Village applied to the Regional Transportation Authority's (RTA) Community Planning program for funding and planning assistance and was selected by the RTA to develop a study to explore site and development potential.
At its March 19, 2012 meeting, the Village Board determined that the plan outlined in the report was not feasible for our community. While the report was formally “accepted” to be part of the public record and to be available for future discussions, the plan was not adopted to become a component of the Village’s comprehensive plan. It does not represent the Policy of the Village or its Board of Trustees.

Train Station Redevelopment Plan (2012) - Not Adopted
March 19, 2012 Village Board Minutes
The Village Board, however, is pursuing grant funding for some of the interim infrastructure improvements identified in the original report that would not limit the long term development potential of the site including re-paving of the parking lot, installing improved lighting, revitalization of the warming shelters and a possible pedestrian underpass to ease the use of the station and provide for a safer way for children and other pedestrians. If grant funding is received, the Village Board will discuss the project at meetings that are open to the public before voting to move forward. September 2012 - West Suburban Mass Transit Board awarded a $100,000 grant to the Village to install much needed lighting enhancements and parking lot repair at the Clarendon Hills Metra Station. Testing and design activities for these improvements are under way.
